How to Remove Graffiti

Whether you’re a business owner, homeowner, or simply someone affected by vandals leaving their mark on your property, graffiti is best left for the movies and city-funded murals. That said, it happens every day. Short of contacting a professional, you may be feeling hopeless. If you’re wondering how to remove graffiti, the Franchise Professionals at SERVPRO® of Cape May & Cumberland Counties have a few tricks you can try before calling for help.

Unfortunately, there’s not a one-size-fits-all solution for removing graffiti. How to remove graffiti effectively has all to do with the materials you use and the surface it’s on.

Here are a few tips on how to remove graffiti effectively on these three surfaces.

Metal Surfaces

There are many products on the market geared for graffiti removal you can pick up at the store. These may come in handy in your DIY approach, though, they may not remove every trace. For metal surfaces, try wiping the surface with a paint thinner or penetrating oil. You can even try an adjustable pressure washer to lift the graffiti after application of a product.

Wood Surfaces

If you have a painted wood surface—a painted white deck, for example—your best bet is to paint over the graffiti. However, if you have natural or stained wood, you’ll need to remove it. This can be tricky. Pressure washing wood may be effective, but it can also do damage and cause the spray paint to seep deeper into the surface if not careful. If the graffiti is fresh, a mineral spirit or paint thinner may help when applied.

Masonry Surfaces

If painting over the graffiti on masonry isn’t an option at your home or business, you’ll want to use a pressure washer to remove the spray paint. Start with low pressure and spray from two feet away until you notice the graffiti starting to fade. If the graffiti isn’t noticeably fading, turn the pressure up and step another foot back, as to not damage the masonry.
