Winter Roof Maintenance Tips

Your roof can take a beating in the winter. With wear and tear more common in the winter season due to harsh weather, you need to take preventative measures to minimize the damage with winter roof maintenance. You don’t want a leaky roof in the cold winter months and if you don’t maintain it now, chances of seeing leaks and other issues may increase.

Calling roofers for roof maintenance before winter starts is key to avoiding all these potential problems. In addition to calling a roofing company for maintenance, you also need to become more proactive in looking after your roof.

High Point Roofing, GAF Master Elite contractors, located in Pilesgrove, NJ, has some winter roof maintenance tips for homeowners to follow.

1.    Remove Debris from Your Roof before It Starts to Snow

If your trees branch out above your home, they will drop leaves on your roof. Leaves and debris can clog your gutters and collect in overhangs. Installing new gutters, keeping old ones repaired, and cleaning them will help avoid any issues. According to High Point Roofing, clearing leaves from your roof will ensure proper water flow and drainage. Cleaning both gutters and drains will reduce ice damage and help you maintain a good drainage system for your home, especially when the snow starts to melt. You can contact a roofing contractor to clean your roof and inspect your gutters for clogs.

2.    Remove Snow from Your Roof before It Melts

Letting the snow sit on your roof for several weeks and months can compromise your roof’s structural integrity. If the snow keeps accumulating on your roof, it will weigh it down. Another problem with too much snow collecting on your roof is that it can create an ice dam.

An ice dam occurs when water keeps melting and re-freezing. This can create a leakage and loosen the roof shingles. High Point Roofing says that if you notice ice or snow on your roof, remove it immediately. Since going up on the roof yourself may be dangerous due to the slippery condition, consider contacting a roofing company to do it.

3.    Repair Damaged Flashing

Inspect the flashing of your roof. Even if your flashing was installed correctly several years ago, it can become loose and warped over time. Faulty flashing allows snow and ice to enter your roof easily. Excess buildup of moisture can cause leaks, leading water to enter your home. While you are at it, inspect your shingles as well. Are they starting to chip or peel? If so, get them replaced as soon as possible. If you delay, water can seep into your ceiling.

4.    Get a Roof Inspection

Before the start of winter, hire a roofing contractor to inspect your roof for all the problems mentioned here. They will inspect your roof to determine all the areas that require repair. They will pay special attention to flashing because faulty flashing can cause leaks. If your roof is beyond repair, they may suggest roof replacement.
